Self Portrait Saturday

Hey there guys!

How was your week? Mine has been busy. I don’t think I have said anything to you guys, but the wrist I had broken, like 2 years ago, has been REALLY hurting. I finally couldn’t take it anymore and went to immediate care one day. They took X-rays and concluded that I have something called “De Quervain’s tenosynovitis” and “polyarticular degenerative disease”.

YAY! I guess I have been surfing for too much porn lately! 😁

Well, they told me to see a hand specialist, which I did yesterday. He gave me a steroid injection to my wrist and said it can take about a week to notice any benefit. It doesn’t really hurt that much to type on the keyboard, it is only when I use my mouse or go to write something down that the pain becomes unbearable. He said I could try a different kind of mouse (I currently use a trackball), but the type he suggested is over $80.00 and I just don’t have that much to spend on a stupid mouse right now. I guess I will have to try and give my wrist a break! 😜

Anyway, so what is everyone doing this weekend? I picture you guys having or going to some barbeque cookouts🍗. That would be fun, but it is supposed to be a little on the cool side with chances of rain, plus, I don’t own a grill!!! lol

I hope you all have fun no matter what you do!

Hugs,
Jason

  1. Jason, once the shot really takes effect, life gets so much better. I was diagnosed with dequervain’s syndrome some 25+ years ago. The shot was horrible, and worse, they told me I’d need one about every 5 years. The doctor had a sense of humor: learn to use the mouse, and masturbate, with my other hand. I’ve not had another shot since, and very, very rarely has the pain been enough to switch hands for a day.
It’s raining here in the Pacific NW (surprise, surprise) and is supposed to through Monday. Our building is still doing a BBQ/potluck for all us low-income senior and disabled people. Yay!

    • Hi Paul!

Thanks for your comment! I really hope I have a similar experience with the steroid injection! It kind of seems to feel a little better, but the pain is still there and annoying. I tried using a left-handed mouse but could not master it. As for the other things… let’s just say I am a little out of practice with my left hand… 😜

It is raining here in the Chicago area as well. I hope you enjoyed your BBQ/potluck! Did you bring anything? Potlucks are a good time to try foods you might not have ever had before. I haven’t been to one since leaving California. We used to have them once a week! They were fun!

      Cheers,
      Jason

  2. Hi Jason,
My left forearm/wrist was mangled in a motorcycle accident about 5 years ago, it forced me to retire early too. It still hurts so I have to take it easy and constantly protect it from unnecessary contact, I doubt mine will ever stop hurting. At least I have a semi-usable left hand. I can still type.
What am I doing on Memorial Day Weekend? I am watching UFL football games, all four of them. I love football but stopped watching NFL after it turned into a fake show like Wrestling.
I hope you have a great weekend.

    • Hey Greg! Thanks for your comment! I am so sorry to hear about your motorcycle accident! I hear those can be pretty scary. I haven’t been on a motorcycle in YEARS! I am not sure I would ride one here in the Chicago area… People drive crazy here! LOL!

I hope you enjoyed your UFL games!

      Cheers,
      Jason

  3. Oy. Not only is it a painful condition, it’s disastrous for a child of the computer age. Let’s hope the shot kicks in soon, and with great effect.
For the meantime, you may not know it but one can run Windows (mostly) without a mouse. Just Google “Windows interface keystrokes” and you’ll get a lot of instructions. Also look for “turn on easy access keys.”
In the long term, it’s worth checking back with the hand doctor if adopting a healthier hand pose will prevent a second flare-up. The usual suggestion is to pose your wrists up in the air and let the fingers dangle down (like playing the piano). This supposedly avoids strain on the wrist ligaments.
    Get well soon, Jason!

    • Hi YW!

Thank you so much for the computer tips! I am WAY too addicted to using a mouse, but I will try some of the shortcuts. I am currently using a Logitech Ergo Trackball Mouse which allows you to adjust the angle that your hand is in. It is no longer helping. I am going to try a “vertical” mouse. I hope it works.

      Thanks again for your comments!!!

      Cheers,
      Jason

  4. Oh man! I wish you lived in suburban Philadelphia, one of the best hand surgeons IN THE WORLD practices there. He’s brilliant and really down to earth. He teaches all over the world and is considered top of the list by others in his field. I broke the bone that goes from the wrist to the index finger into four pieces in a bicycle vs bicycle hit and run accident (which is actually a felony – leaving the scene of a personal injury or property damage accident, punishable by the same laws governing automobiles). Anyway, this doc did surgery and I was back on my bicycle in less than a month! Best of luck in your recovery, Jimmy

    • Hey Jimmy, Thanks for your comment! Your doctor sounds amazing! I am VERY picky about my doctors… This is the second wrist surgeon that I have seen about this issue. The first one just said “It’s probably arthritis” and sent me on my way… The one I just saw was a bit more thorough but had the bedside manner of a mushroom (and not the good kind).

Sorry to hear about your accident! I really don’t understand why people hit and run… I would never think of doing that!

I hope you had a great weekend!

      Cheers,
      Jason
