Hey guys!
I hope you are all enjoying your weekend! We are doing something a LITTLE different today. The first gallery of pictures are the normal selfies that I was planning on posting as usual. The LAST gallery of photos is a mixture of regular selfies and AI generated selfies. I am not telling you which is which until the next post. BUT if you could do me a HUGE favor, the creator of the AI generated selfies would like to see if you can pick out the real from the fake. I am curious as well. SO, if you could leave a comment (or if you would prefer, send me an e-mail to boyohboi@gmail.com) and say which ones you think are which and IF you think one or more are AI generated, if you could also state what about the picture makes you think the way you do. In other words, if you think a picture is AI generated tell me what about it makes you think it is AI generated, or what about the picture makes you think it is NOT AI generated (AKA real).
It is kind of like a game. Just to set the record straight though – I try VERY hard NOT to post pictures I know are AI generated without TELLING you that the image is AI generated. Sometimes I get fooled, and the pictures get through my “censor” lol. We are all human… well, unless you’re not… 🤣
Thanks for playing along and have a GREAT weekend!!!
Jason

Early AI pictures almost looked to me like paintings. The models looking too perfect. More recent AI pictures are looking more and more real. The subtle nuances are disappearing. However, if I were to guess which ones today are AI generated, I would say all of the pictures identified as JohnWPB_SelfiesSaturday.
I would be curious as to how AI pictures are made. Are they made entirely from scratch, or do they take an existing photo and make modifications?
Hi Daniel. I agree with you about the early AI pics looking like paintings. Sadly, I have also seen a LOT of REAL pics where they are “air brushed” too much. I hate that!
I have played around with AI a little bit but NEVER had results that even came close to these.
Well, if my guesses are right, I have to say these are really good. I can usually spot AI immediately. What I’ve noticed is generally they look almost “painterly” – almost too perfect and kind of blurred (like an oil brush stroke.) That’s not to say the entire image looks this way, just certain areas look….fake .. or slightly blurry – something you wouldn’t see in “reality.” Like individual hairs that are not delineated. Initially, the eyes in AI images were a dead giveaway. They looked odd and downright creepy sometimes. But now, I’ve noticed that it seems to have worked this kink out.
Anyway, these are my guesses (starting from top left): 2,5,6,7,8,9 *
*Not all of the images loaded on my screen.
*If #2 is fake, it’s one of the best I’ve seen. If he’s real, when can we meet? 😉
This was a lot of fun btw. Thanks!
I agree with your guesses DB! Good call!
For me, I thought #1, #3 and #7 were the most convincing. Especially #7 because the subject of most AI generated pics are usually blonde.
No matter how “realistic” an AI image looks, you can still catch things that are off. AI cannot draw penises or fingers very well. Sometimes it adds fingers. Also, if there’s some areas of the photo that are really sharp while other areas are a bit blurry, that’s an indication as well. I spotted at least 5 in the first few rows of the second gallery. I didn’t go through them all yet, but I’m sure there are more that are easy to spot. I have a few AI images that are framed in my bathroom that I bought off of Etsy. They are really good and look like classic fine art paintings. LOVE them! Some AI images are good and others are really bad. 😊🏳️🌈 AI is just a big scrubber after all. It has no original creativity or intelligence. LOL!
Hint: There are actually 10 AI images in the second group of images 😉
To my eye, the first half of the gallery are the most suspicious of being AI generated. Overall, the people aren’t too bad: 1) right hand awkwardly vanishes; 2) very airbrushed finish to his skin, his cheeks are very pink, and his right nipple is a bit strange looking; 3) right foot has some gnarly toes; 4) actually looks quite convincing; 5) has six fingers on his left hand and has that airbrushed look; 6) fingers are really twisted and unnatural looking; 7) fingers are also really awkward looking, his thumb appears to be blending into his penis, and he looks airbrushed; 8) left hand looks like it’s missing fingers; 9) fingers are a total mess; 10) the two guys look pretty convincing.
Other than the people, the (suspected) AI pictures have some strange things going on in the rest of the image: 1) the room makes no sense and the wall corners are inconsistent; 2) the background looks decent, but the lower door hinge looks a bit odd; 3) the stuff in the background on the right is total nonsense, the frame around the mirror is strange, especially in the lower left; 4) also has nonsensical objects in the background, especially on the wall to the right, the blanket at the foot of the bed is doing strange things; 5) the stuff in the background is dark and hard to make out so it’s hard to identify specific flaws; 6) the geometry of the space is very impractical, with exceedingly narrow passages on either side; 7) the objects on the desk are a total mishmash, there are odd basket-like things on both sides of the picture, the computer monitor is messed up; 8) the fixtures in this room are nonsensical, especially the random tap-like thing on the left, the pulls on the cabinets, the strangely-placed hand towel, the tub in the background has inconsistent shape; 9) the furniture on the right looks deformed, and the wall coverings behind his left shoulder are nonsense; 10) three wash basins seems excessive, and one of the taps appears misplaced, the shower stall is tiny, but has some kind of giant plumbing fixture in there, the cabinets on the left have odd shapes to the doors and drawers.
After going into all that detail, I’ll happily laugh if I turn out to be wrong. It seems like avoiding the AI’s weaknesses really helps improve how convincing the pictures are. The background in 2) for instance, doesn’t really offer anything to detect flaws in. Not showing the feet avoids issues with the toes being strange.
WOW David! Thank you VERY much for all the details in your comment! You pointed out several things I quickly overlooked! I had to go back and see what you were talking about. You should go into business as Chief AI Detector!
Thanks again!
sending my answer by email so as to not influence anyone else. I will say this, limiting myself just to the images that interested me, two were wickedly obvious fakes, the others that I thought were fakes I only suspected because I was told there were fakes in the group. Had I not known and not taken time to study them, I would have accepted them as real.
AI is getting better and better and VERY quickly! I was fooled by a few of them too.
