Happy Sunday!

Because it is so hard for me to type – I am going to give you a brief summary about where things stand with my cervical myelopathy:

I had my third opinion with top neurosurgeon this last Wednesday. It went well, I really like the doctor and his team. He explained the surgery he proposed (which was also proposed by neurosurgeon #2). It is major and makes me nauseous thinking about it, but basically they are going to cut open the back of my neck, remove portions of bone to allow room for my spinal cord to release some pressure which is what is causing my pain and numbness. They then will be attaching or “fusing” the vertebra in my neck (the 2nd vertebrae at the top of my neck all the way down to the 7th vertebrae) using some titanium rods and screws. Sounds fun, right!???! The 3rd neurosurgeon AND the 2nd neurosurgeon will BOTH be operating on me. My insurance company is going to LOVE getting that bill! I can’t even imagine how much it will be! I will be in the hospital for around 3 nights. I have scheduled the surgery for September 18th. The recovery is going to be a long one. I will not be able to lift anything heavier than 5 pounds for a week or so and then no more than 15 pounds for around 3 weeks. And, from what the doctors have told me, it is going to be a painful recovery – they will be giving me some opioid based pain med for about 3 weeks. Then I will probably need extensive physical therapy for about 12 months.

Welļ, that is it. Simple, isn’t it!

  1. Hi Jason, I sincerely hope the surgery goes well, but i do hope that the surgeons also explained the high risk of paralysis, “IF” the spinal cord is damaged in any way, during the surgery. My surgery was cancelled by the surgeon, for lower spinal surgery, due to the risks being too high for him.

    • Thanks Steve. The dangers of paralysis are present anytime the spinal cord is involved. It turns out that the risk of paralysis if I DON’T have the surgery are greater than becoming paralyzed from the surgery itself. But I appreciate your concern!

  2. Glad it is scheduled and the plans made. Also that you finally got the third surgeons opinion. I was fortunate when I had 3 neurosurgeries, as I was in a coma and had no clue or memory of it. It was a find fuck when I came out of the coma and found out my Neurosurgeon looked like fucking Jesus. Everyone called him Dr Jesus behind his back.

    Anyway. Good luck, all my appendages are crossed for you and a speeding recovery. Listen to the physical therapist. Times will make you lash out at them and hate them and fight them. It is kind of normal. But listen to them. But also if you think they are going easy or lazy on you, speak up as well. Take care Jason.

  3. I’m sorry you’re going through this. But please understand you are so much stronger than you realize. We don’t know just what we are capable of until circumstances put us to the test.

    I had a very similar surgery. Yes, recovery was painful. I don’t like taking pills at all, but the pain medication did help. Having something to prop myself up in bed so there was less stress on my neck when I had to move or get up also helped. Having a close friend or a family member to lean on also makes a huge difference.

    You have so many people visiting your website that genuinely care about you. They appreciate the updates and they are rooting for you. You are not alone. Though the road may be rough at times, you absolutely have the power to not only endure, but to overcome. You got this. I believe in YOU.

  4. So, let me get this straight. For 3 days and 3 nights you’re going to have to eat hospital food? … Ooooooh, that’s really bad. Courage!
