Hey guys!

Well, I had a CT scan and X-Rays yesterday and saw the new neurosurgeon. His diagnosis is that I have something called cervical myelopathy and possibly carpal tunnel syndrome. As for the myelopathy, he recommends surgery. He wants to fuse all disks of my cervical spine with the exception of disk one and disk two. This would GREATLY decrease the range of motion of my head. Meaning that I would not be able to turn my head sideways or up and down very much. He said that the surgery takes about 3 hours and is a painful and long recovery since they would be accessing the spine through the back of the neck. The recovery would be: First 3 months – I cannot lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk, second 3 months – I could not lift more than 25 pounds. Final 6 months – I could not lift more than 50 pounds. After the 12 months I could resume life normally. He also said that about one in 10,000 of these surgeries the patient ends up permanently blind. He said that the goal of surgery is to keep things from getting worse and he could NOT guarantee that I would feel better after the recovery period. He also suggested that I get a THIRD opinion from another neurosurgeon. If I do nothing, I will be living with the pain and numbness and if it progresses, I could affect my walking ability.

So there you have it. I do NOT want to go through surgery and one year of recovery with the possibility that I could end up losing my sight. What are your thoughts, guys? I would love to hear from you.

Who Would You Do? Version 110

Hi again!

I thought I would update you guys on what has transpired over the last 24 hours. By the grace of Zeus, I somehow managed to get an appointment yesterday with a new neurosurgeon. He is located on Chicago’s south side at the University of Chicago Medical Center, which is about an hour or more away by car, depending on traffic. That is a little inconvenient, but worth it to me. He gets amazing reviews. I met with him yesterday (that’s fast, isn’t it?!). I can tell he is very different than the last neurosurgeon, which is awesome. He listened to me and seemed to understand my concerns. He did a VERY thorough exam, something that my LAST doctor (who was also with a very well respected medical facility, Northwestern Medical Center) did NOT do. He ordered some CT scans and X-rays, which I have scheduled for early next week. He even ordered some blood work to see if any of my neurological symptoms could be caused by some vitamin or other deficiencies. Just today, I sent messages back and forth with his nurse – who responds within MINUTES of my messages. The old doctor’s office took 2 days to get a response. I am, once again, a little hopeful that there may be a solution. That alone is making me “feel” a little better.

I cannot tell you how much your supportive and caring comments and e-mails have meant to me. You guys are always so awesome! Thank you!
